Thomas H. McPherson served for twelve months in Capt. W.T. Gass's Company, Brazelton's Batt'n, Tennessee Cavalry. His name appears on the muster-in roll at Knoxville, Tennessee, on August 5, 1861. Also his name appeared on the company muster roll for October 31, 1861, to April 30, 1862; July and August 1862, September and October 1862. At Stauton, Va., June 8, 1864, he appears on a list of prisoners under guard. At Camp Morton, Indianapolis, Indiana, he appears on a roll of prisoners of war dated June 21, 1864. He had been captured on June 5 at Piedmont, VA. He took the oath of allegiance to the United States Government and sworn to at Camp Morton on June 12, 1865 and released.

Thomas Hawes McPherson and other McPherson graves, at one time were located on private land but because of the TVA project to make room for the Watts Bar Reservoir, his and a number of other McPherson's were removed to Spring Cemetery in 1947.
