About Thomas Peter of Crossbasket

THOMAS PETER OF CARDARROCH AND CROSSBASKET

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket is the eldest son of Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket. This is confirmed by his deceased father's testament dative, where he is noticed as his father's principal debtor, [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court,The Testament Dative of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, senior, reference CC9/7/69] and by the precept of clare constat issued to his only son, Lieutenant-general Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket. [National Records of Scotland, Particular Register of Sasines for the Sherifdom of Lanark, reference RS42/20/393-94]

His Birth and Baptism

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket was born before 22 April 1723, the date upon which his baptism was registered at Cadder in Lanarkshire, Scotland [Cadder Baptisms] His mother is not mentioned in his baptismal record but there seems hardly any doubt that he is the son of Jean Dunlop. His baptismal record reads as follows: "Thomas lawll son to Thomas Peters of Corsbasket baptised. Witnesses thereof James Dunlop of Garnkirk and Archibald Roberton merchant in Glasgow" [Registrar General for Scotland, New Register House, Edinburgh, Cadder Baptisms, 1662-1744, reference OPR.626/1/4] Image of Baptismal Record

The University or College of Glasgow

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket matriculated at the University of Glasgow in 1737. W. Innes Addison identifies him as the brother of Colin Peter and the son of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket. He joined the class of Alexander Dunlop, Professor of Greek, who was born in Colonial Carolina, but he did not graduate. W. Innes Addison, The Matriculation Albums of the University of Glasgow: entry 651 on page 19

Glasgow Burgesses, 1573-1750: 459

Dunlop and Peter

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket and James Dunlop, younger of Garnkirk were equal partners in a business which traded under the name of Dunlop and Peter. Garnkirk younger was Thomas Peter's nephew and when Garnkirk became insolvent in November 1763 Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket: "was the sole active Partner and Manager of the said Company". On the day of his death the estimated worth of the business was one thousand six hundred pounds Sterling [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court, The Testament Dative of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, reference CC9/7/69, ff. 574-82]

Dinwiddie, Crawford and Company

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket held a one tenth share in the firm of Dinwiddie Crawford & Company, a company "carrying on Trade to and from the Tobacco Collonys under the firm and title of Dinwiddie Crawfurd and Company Merchants in Glasgow". On the day of his death his share of the Capital Stock of this company was worth one thousand nine hundred and thirty-six pounds and nine shillings Sterling. [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court, The Testament Dative of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, reference CC9/7/69, ff. 574-82]

The four pound lands of Cardarroch

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket had a long association with Cardarroch House in the Lanarkshire parish of Cadder. He was probably born at Cardarroch: His baptism was certainly registered at Cadder on 22 April 1723 [National Records of Scotland, Cadder Baptisms, 1662-1744, reference OPR.626/1-4]. It would seem too that most if not all of his formative years might have been spent there for the baptisms of all thirteen of his younger siblings were registered at Cadder during the years 1724-36. The family probably also spent some time in Glasgow, during the working week, perhaps, or when Thomas senior was away on business, but it is noteworthy, that when his sister Helen was buried in Glasgow her father is identified as Thomas Peter of Cardarroch in her burial record.

The association with Cardarroch House continued after his marriage to Marion Bogle and the baptisms of four out of five of his children were registered at Cadder during the years 1751-59. The Cardarroch estate should have passed to Thomas Peter, here treated, when his father died in October 1773 but he died in January 1774 before he could take formal possession.

The lands of Crossbasket

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket maintained a residence at Crossbasket, although it might only have been one or two rooms in the main house, or a small house in the grounds. The possibility that he did is suggested by his testament dative which informs us that he had a house in Glasgow, another at Springvale, near Glasgow, and that the household furniture belonging to him, from both houses, together with certain furnishings, grain, farm animals, and farm impliments, in and about Crossbasket, were sold for the benefit of his three surving daughters, Isobel, Jean, and Margaret. His eldest son, Lieutenant-General Thomas Pete of Crossbasket and Craigmaddie, is not mentioned in his testament dative, although all of his father's heritable property would pass to him. [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court, Register of Testaments, the Testament Dative of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, reference CC9/7/69 pages 574-82]

On 2 January 1774, the day of his death, Thomas Peter, younger of Crossbasket and Cardarroch, was owed certain sums of money for rent by two of his tenants on the Crossbasket estate: "Item the sum of twenty five pounds sterling by John Smith in Basket as the money rent of his possession for cropt and year one thousand seven hundred and seventy three. Item nine pounds sterling by Matthew Young in Basket as the one half of the money rent of his possession for cropt and year of one thousand seven hundred and seventy three" [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court, The Testament Dative of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, reference CC9/7/69 pages 574-82]

The lands of Auchentibber and Drumlochernoch

On the day that he died Thomas Peter of Crossbasket and Cardarroch was owed certain sums of money for his lands in Auchentiber: "fourty pounds Sterling by James Hogg in Auchentiber as the money rent of his possession for he crop and year 1773, and twelve pounds Sterling as the rent of a house owing by Alexander Nimmo"

The Mailing called Craigneith

On the day that he died Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket was owed "sixteen pounds thirteen shillings and four pence Sterling by Sir William Maxwell of Calderwood. This was for "few duty of lands holden by him under the defunct for crop and year one housand seven hundred & seventy three" [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court, The Testament Dative of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, reference CC9/7/69 pages 574-82]

Death

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket is reported to have died at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland, on 2 January 1774 [W. Innes Addison, The Matriculation Albums of the University of Glasgow From 1728-1858 (James McLehose and Sons, Glasgow, 1913), entry number 51 on page 19]. His testament dative confirms that he died in January 1774 [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Commissary Court, The Testament Dative of Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, reference CC9/7/69 pages 574-82]

His Testament Dative

On 29 March 1774 the Testament Dative and Inventory of the deceased Thomas Peter of Crossbasket, here treated, was given up by his daughters Isobel Peter, Jean Peter, and Margaret Peter, and by Isobel Peter's husband James McDowall, Merchant, for his interest, which daughters were confirmed as executors dative and nearest in kin to their deceased father. Marriage

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket married Marion Bogle (Otherwise Mene Bogle).. The Church of Scotland marriage register for Glasgow records the event thus: "Thos: Peters Mene Bogle irregularly married". It cannot be regarded as being certain but the fact that they were irregularly married suggests that one or other of them may have been a member of one of the dissenting churches, rather than the established Church of Scotland.
