About Jean Dunlop

JEAN DUNLOP (1693-1761)

Jean Dunlop, here treated, is the daughter of James Dunlop of Garnkirk, younger. She was born before 15 June 1693, the date upon which her baptism was registered at Cadder in Lanarkshire, Scotland. She was probably born at Garnkirk in the same parish. [National Records of Scotland, Cadder Baptisms, 1662-1744, reference OPR.626/1]

In at least one account of her family she is said to be the daughter of Lillias Campbell, although her mother's name is not mentioned in her baptismal record. However, her baptism appears to have been sponsored by both of her grandfathers. It reads as follows: "Jean lawll daughter to James Dunlop younger off Garnkirk baptized Witneses James Dunlop elder there Robt Campbell (Dean of Guild) of Glasgow Archibald Roberton of Bedlay (Wm) and Thomas Dunlopes". [National Records of Scotland, Cadder Baptisms, 1662-1744, reference OPR.626/1] Image of Baptismal Record

Death

Jean Dunlop, here treated, died before 27 January 1761. She probably died at Glasgow in Lanarkshire, Scotland, for her burial took place there. Her burial record reads as follows: "Jean Dunlope spouse to Thomas Petters Carsebasket". [National Records of Scotland, Glasgow Deaths, 1757-68, reference OPR.644/48] Image of Burial Record

Marriage

Jean Dunlop, here treated, married Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket. They were booked for proclamation of marriage in their home parish of Cadder in Lanarkshire, Scotland, on 23 June 1722 and they were married at Garnkirk there, the bride’s home, on 2 July that same year. The marriage record reads as follows: “June 23d (1722) Thomas Peter of Corsebasket and Jean Dunlop daughter lawfull to the deceast James Dunlop of Garnkirk both in this parish had their purpose of marriage three several times orderly proclaimed and nothing being objected against their declared purpose they were married at Garnkirk upon the second day of July”. [National Records of Scotland, Cadder Marriages, 1662-1744, reference OPR.626/1]

Jean Dunlop and her husband entered into a post-nuptial contract of marriage which was signed at Cardarroch, her new home, on 11 April 1724. Under the terms of the contract Jean was to receive a liferent payment of fifteen hundred Scots merks annually in the event that her husband predeceased her, to be restricted to one thousand Scots merks in the event that they had children who survived their father. Her liferent was secured on her husband’s lands in Cadder parish, i.e. Cardarroch and part of the mill of Bedlay, and his lands in Kilbride parish, i.e. the mill and lands of Crossbasket, and the lands of Auchentibber and Drumlochernoch. [National Records of Scotland, Particular Register of Sasines for the Sheriffdom of Renfrew and the Barony and Regality of Glasgow, reference RS54/8/ff. 183r-183v]

Children

Thomas Peter of Cardarroch and Crossbasket (1703-73) and his wife Jean Dunlop had fourteen children. The name of their mother is not mentioned in any of the children's baptismal records but there seems hardly any reason for doubting that Jean Dunlop is the mother of all fourteen. The names of the children follow:

  1. Thomas Peter of Crossbasket
  2. James Peter

  4. Robert Peter in Georgetown
