About Thomas Plummer, of Anne Arundel

https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/LDQ6-ZM2

Place and date of birth are undocumented and highly conjectural. He was probably not the son of Sir Walter Plummer but may have been related to the "Thomas Plummer (or Plomer), merchant" who signed the Second (1609) and Third (1612) Virginia Charters.

Y-DNA evidence states flatly that he was NOT related to the Francis Plummer who emigrated to Massachusetts. His haplotype was probably G2a3b1 (based on confirmed male-line descendant testing). Francis Plummer and his male-line descendants were R1b1a2 (and *not* a match to the descendants of this profile who tested into the same general haplotype).

And no, he's not a match for Richard III of England either - same haplotype, divergent markers.

There has long been a conundrum as to whether Thomas Plummer, Sr. married Elizabeth Smith or Elizabeth Stockett. It now appears that he married Elizabeth Smith and his son, Thomas Plummer Jr., married Elizabeth Stockett (or, more accurately, Yate).

Thomas Plummer was born in 1642 in ENGL. He emigrated in 1667. He died about 1694 in Anne Arundel, MD. (note: there is a conflicting report he returned to England)

Elizabeth Smith was born in 1646 in Anne Arundel, MD. She died about 1694. Thomas Plummer and Elizabeth Smith had the following children:

  • 1. +3 i. Thomas Plummer.
  • 2. +4 ii. Margaret Plummer.
  • 3. +5 iii. Mary Plummer.
  • 4. +6 iv. Susannah Plummer.
  • 5. +7 v. Elizabeth PLUMMER.

Email of July 22, 2000 from Roberta Ross to the Ijams-L mail list:
"First of all, I would not use the genealogy in Ralph Reynolds book. Second the best source for the Plummer genealogy was done by Elsie Greenup Jourdan which you refer to. According to Elsie G. Jourdan the genealogy should be: 1. Thomas Plummer was born in England before 1630 and we know from records died c.1694/5. He married first Elizabeth possibly Smith? Children: 1. Margaret Plummer b. abt 1662 married Hugh Riley 2. Mary Plummer b. abt 1664 married William Jackson 3. Susannah Plummer b. abt 1666 married Francis Swanson 4. Thomas Plummer, Jr. b. 1670 married Elizabeth Stockett 5. Elizabeth Yates Plummer b. January 19, 1677/78 married William Iiams son of William & Elizabeth Cheyney. Elizabeth Yates [or Smith] was the daughter of Joseph/George Yates and Mary Wells. The Elizabeth Plummer who married William Iiams could not have been the daughter of Thomas Plummer, Jr. and Elizabeth Stockett. She would have been born when he was just 7 years old. Without DOB's on Elizabeth Stockett, it would be guessing. Harry Newman could be wrong in his description of Elizabeth Stockett i.e., the only daughter and heiress of Thomas Plummer and his second wife. There is probably a genealogy on the Stockett family. I have a CD on Maryland and I will look at it. What you have is correct - I just do not show that Thomas 1630 married a 2nd time to Elizabeth Stockett. Sorry. Roberta"

E-mail message from Steven W. Hornaday to the Plummer-L mail list at Rootsweb, December 4, 2000:
"Thomas Plummer was married to Elizabeth Stockett. Her parents were Thomas Stockett and Mary Wells.

Thomas Stockett died about 1671 when Elizabeth was a child. Mary Wells then married George Yates about 1673 and he died abt 1691. Elizabeth's stepfather left her some land in his will and I believe that is where the confusion was started.

"Elizabeth inherited 200 acres remaining ushold of 800 acres of "Rich Level" and 118 acres of "Level Addition" from the 1691 will of her step-father, George Yate, erroneously listed "Joseph Yate" (Maryland Cal, Wills, Vol. II page 48)."

The will of Captain Thomas Stockett, dated April 23, 1671, was admitted to probate on May 3, 1671, in Anne Arundel Co., Maryland by Thomas Besson and Thomas Hedges. To wife, Mary, the entire real and personal estate during life. To son, Thomas, and an unborn child, is son, all land at death of wife. To daughters (unnamed) all personal estate at death of wife. To cousin, Henry White, "I bequeath my Siorrell Stone Coalt." To . . . "I do give and bequeath unto my dear and loving brother, Francis Stockett, my Silver Seale with the Arms of our family engraved thereon." Executors: brothers, Francis Stockett, Henry Stockett and Richard Wells.

Legacy to Abiezer to be in possession of son Yate until Abiezer arrives of age of 21. To 2 sons, viz: Micajah and Yate tract called "Liford". Residue to personal estate to be divided between two youngest sons, Yate and Abiezer. Executors: sons Micajah and Yate. Witness: John Evans, Sr., John Evans, Jr, Eliner Evans. (Maryland Cal, Wills, Vol, VII, page 181, Liber 21, folio 617)

I have that Thomas Plummer Jr. married Elizabeth (Eliza) Smith. I have seen that info somewhere about Elizabeth Yate and Thomas Jr., but do not remember where. They had a son named "Yate" could that a confusion?

If you search the archives there was some discussion about Sir Walter Plummer. I do not remember what the outcome was...
