About Thomas Tarbell, of Groton & Charlestown

Not the same as Thomas Turville, of Newbury.

Evidence needed to support as son of Thomas Turvill

Thomas TARBELL was born About 1615 in England, and died 11 JUN 1678 at Charlestown, Massachusetts Bay Colony. Birth seen as 02/21/1620 Romsey, Hampshire, without supporting evidence, and which is the data for the unrelated Thomas Turville of Newbury.

Disputed origins

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tarbell-14

Thomas Tarbell and Dorothy Rogers were previously attached as parents of Thomas, but there are no sources to support the connection. A baptism of "Thomas Turvile" on 21 February 1620 in Romsey, Hampshire,[10] was previously included in the biography of this profile, but it there is no evidence that it represents the Thomas of this profile. There's no evidence of a relationship between Turville/Turvill and Tarbell families. Alternative spellings of this Tarbell family include Tarbole and Tarball, but none show up as Turvill.

He arrived 1644 in Watertown, MA. He owned land and was farming in Watertown, MA as early as 1647 (ref___). His wife was named Mary, surname unknown.

On 30 March 1663, Thomas and his family moved to Groton, MA. where Thomas Sr. was a proprietor (later to be joined by Thomas Jr.,) Mary died in Groton on 29 April 1674, at age 54 years, in the few years preceding King Philip’s War. Thomas remarried in Charlestown on 15 August 1676 to Mrs. Susanna Lawrence, widow of John Lawrence. 1678 Groton was nearly destroyed during King Philip's War and the residents were forced to flee.

King Philip's War, sometimes called Metacom's War or Metacom's Rebellion, was an armed conflict between Native American inhabitants of present-day southern New England and English colonists and their Native American allies from 1675–1676. The war is named after the main leader of the Native American side, Metacomet, Metacom, or Pometacom, known to the English as "King Philip." It continued in northern New England (primarily on the Maine frontier) even after King Philip was killed, until a treaty was signed at Casco Bay in April 1678.

Thomas contracted small-pox and died in Charlestown on 11 June 1678. His Will was probated in Groton, MA. Thomas Sr. and Mary Tarbell had eight children.

Notes

THOMAS TARBELL, an original proprietor of Groton, MA, found in the NEHGS Register, Vol 61, p. 70 (1907):

"Thomas Tarbell, the ancestor of all the early Tarbell families of New England, settled in Watertown as early as 1647, at which time he is mentioned on the town records as owning land. On Mar 30, 1663, he and his wife, Mary, sold his house and land there, and removed to Groton, where she died Apr 29, 1674, aged 54 years. The family retired from Groton to Charlestown at the destruction of the former town during King Philip's War, and there he married second, Aug 15, 1676, Susanna, widow of John Lawrence, and died of the small pox, June 11, 1678. Administration upon his estate was granted to his son, John, Aug 17, 1678. The settlement of his estate was contained in two papers in the Middlesex County Court, bearing dates of May 31, 1680, and Mar 18, 1680/1, shows the following children: Thomas, Mary, Sarah, Abigail, John, Elizabeth, William and Martha.

from what I see a birth place is not given for Thomas - England is assumed - as for Watertown being his birthplace that is doubtful it is mention as: Settled in Watertown as early as 1647 when he is mentioned in the records as owning land.
