About Valerie "Valli" Pollak, הי״ד

Valerie "Valli" Kafka (b. September 25 1890, † autumn 1942 in Chelmno) was the second oldest sister of Franz Kafka.

Valli Kafka attended the German School for Girls Prague and later a private training institute for girls. She married in 1913 a commercial employee, Josef Pollak, with whom she had daughters Marianne (1913-2000) and Lotte (1914-1931).

Little is known about the relationship of Kafka to Valli. Of all the siblings, she was allegedly the one who had with his father Hermann Kafka the least trouble. Outwardly, she seemed shy . . . but was well read and had a good feeling for language.

End of October 1941 Valli was with her husband deported to the Lodz ghetto where they lived temporarily, in the spring of 1942, with Vallis sister Elli and her daughter Hanna. Valerie Pollak was probably in the autumn of 1942 in the extermination camp Chelmno murdered.

Elli and the third sister Ottla and other relatives were also victims of the Holocaust. Valli's daughter Marianne emigrated with her husband George Steiner to England in 1939. Until her death she used the legacy of her uncle Franz Kafka.
