Walter was the son of Benjamin and Phillip (Sherman) Chase (also found as Chace) who settled in Freetown in southeastern Massachusetts. He married Deliverance Simmons on 29 Jan 1706 in Taunton, MA, and the couple had 12 children.

Though Walter belonged to the (only) state sanctioned church, his mother was a Sherman, most of whom were Quakers and he was sympathetic toward them, as perhaps shown at a town meeting held 25 May 1713, during which...

Robert Durfee, Constant Church, Benjamin Chase Jr., Walter Chase, and Jacob Hathaway voted against the appropriation of £10 for repairing the (Church of England / Congregational) meeting-house, "and to be added to the 30 pounds rate formerly granted by said town."

He was the sole executor of his father Benjamin's will (proved 25 Jul 1731) Among it's provisions, Benjamin bequeathed "...to sons Benjamin and Walter all my lands in Freetown purchase."
