<p><p>Walter was the son of John & Mary Ann Winston Coles. He attended William and Mary College. He had an active life running a plantation, "Mildendo" (1), grist mill and a ferry, "Coles Ferry". By the terms of his will he owned approximately 6,000 acres. His service to Virginia included appointments as an officer (Major) in charge of the Halifax County Militia, Justice of the Peace and election to the Virginia House of Burgesses. He and Mildred had the following children: Mrs. Mary C. Tucker, Mrs. Mildred Howell C. Carrington, Mrs. Sarah C. Bruce, John, Walter, Isaac "H" & William.
