William Brown born May 20, 1730 in VA, served as private in Rev. War from Jan 1, 1780 to April 18, 1780 in Col. John Gibson's Detachment of the Western Detachment of Virginia.
He married Jane Doak, a daughter of Samuel II and Jane (Mitchell) Doak in Monroe County, West Virginia.
They had ten children during their marriage. He died on March 20, 1806, in Augusta County, Virginia, at the impressive age of ninety-one.
William Brown founded the Cross Keys Tavern 5-6 miles north of Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia. It was at this plantation that the Battle of Cross Keys occurred in 1862 when general Stonewall Jackson defeated General Fremont.
