Disambiguation: William Clark was and still is in many genealogies shown to be William the son of Quaker minister Latham Clarke. This was primarily due to the date of birth appearing in Austin's Rhode Island Dictionary as 27 May 1673 which was an error. William son of Latham has been shown to be of South Kingstown and died in 1746. The WikiTree profile of Latham Clarke was corrected after 6 Jan 2019.

Biography

William was born 27 May 1673. His son William while Town Clerk of Charlestown 1738-1747 recorded his own birth and that of his siblings and parents in Charlestown records.[1][2] However, George Austin Morrison from his research on William and his father for his Clarke Genealogy asserts his birth was in Newport.[3]

As noted above under Disambiguation, William's parentage is often given incorrectly. He is the son of William and Hannah (Weeden) Clarke.[3][4]

William married Hannah Knight, daughter of Jonathan and Hannah Knight born 3 May 1680, on 5 Apr 1700 which is recorded both in Newport and Charlestown.[5][6][7]

Records of the period refer to William as Captain Clarke and he served as a Deputy (Westerly) to the General Assembly 1711, 1730, and 1739.[4]

His Will dated October 7, 1769,[8] proved 7 Mar 1770 at Richmond, mentions sons William, Jonathan, Thomas, Robert, Elisha, Caleb and daughter Judith Potter, wife of Robert Potter. The will is witnessed by Samuel Clarke, Edward Perry, and Thomas Potter.

Research Notes

From History of the State of Rhode Island with Illustrations from Original Sketches by Albert J. Wright, Philadelphia, Hoag, Wade and Co, 1878. [No e-book available, print editions seem limited according to WorldCat]. The text included vital statistics copied from Rev. James Irish's "Historical Sketch of the Town of Richmond" but Irish erred re William's years of birth (1670) and death (1767); these errors were corrected in the text that follows.
William Clarke, first mentioned as being among the early settlers of the town of Richmond, was born at Newport, in 1673, and was one of the original owners of the 'Shannock Purchase'. He died in Richmond, Feb. 28, 1770, in the ninety-seventh year of his age. His son, William, was born at Newport, in 1702, and removed with his parents to Richmond, where he died, March 28, 1786. Five other sons, Thomas, Jonathan, Caleb, Robert and Elisha, were the fruits of his first marriage. His son, William, above mentioned, reared a family of six boys, by name, James, William, Gideon, Joshua, Peter and Weeden; Gideon was the grandfather of John G. Clarke, of South Kingstown, and Weeden, the son of the second William, lived and died at Shannock Hill, leaving a family of four boys, one bearing the name of the father, and the other three named respectively, Peleg, Pardon, and William. Jonathan, the grandfather of H. P. Clarke, left a family of nine children, -- Jonathan, Abraham, Josiah, Nathaniel, Tabitha, Sarah, Benjamin, Hannah, and David. The last mentioned was born Oct. 14, 1756, and married a Miss Mary Cross, by whom he had three children, named Sarah, Ann, and David. This latter David married Miss Susannah Perry, daughter of George Perry, Esq., and their only surviving heir is Halsey P. Clarke. This is indeed a remarkable family, and the preservation of their genealogical record furnishes an example worthy of emulation, and evidences the regard and respect cherished for their illustrious ancestry.

Could not have died in 1767 since his will was dated 1769 and probated in 1770.. Birth was 27 May 1673. per Arnold, James, VItal Records of Rhode Island 1636-1850 Vol. V, Charlestown births. As Charlestown wasn't formed until 1738, his birth is placed in Newport. The birth was recorded at Charlestown by William's son WIlliam who was Charlestown's first Township Clerk

Page 62 states that the son William of this William married Rebecca Wells. This source also states on page 56 that a Hannah Watson married a different William Clarke, son of Latham, in 1723 and that William Clarke died 1746 or 1747 leaving two offspring: Latham, born 1724, died Havana 1762; and John born 13 Jul 1726. Genealogical and biographical memorials of the Reading, Howell, Yerkes, Watts, Latham, and Elkins families. Some of these biographical memorials repeat the erroneous Clarke family lineage given by Austin and others.
