About William E. 'Mack' Spalding
Son of Benjamin Aaron I and Matilda Hager Spalding, was born in Ralls County, MO on 11/17/1829. In young manhood he went to Lebanon, KY where he learned the cabinetmaker's trade, which he taught to his brothers John and Benjamin. He was also an expert violin maker. He was called "Mack" by his relatives and friends. He was married twice. His first wife was Rose Smith. He first entered the furniture and cabinet business at Florida, MO but in 1854 moved his business to Paris, MO where he remained till his death on Jan 27, 1899. After the death of his first wife on May 8, 1866, at Quincy, IL, he married Eliza Ann Speed Spalding, his brother James' widow. She was the daughter of James and Lorinda Weatherford Speed and was born at Paris, MO on Nov 20, 1843. She died at the same place on Jan 16, 1908.
They had no children, but on May 20, 1870 adopted Sterling Price Spalding II.
Both were prominent and highly esteemed citizens of the community in which they lived.
