Obituary*: "Swiger, William E. Two months and sixteen days after his 102nd birthday anniversary, William E. Swiger, one of the oldest Civil War veterans in the United States, passed away at 5:50 o'clock last evening, May 14, 1938 at the home of a grandson, William Price of 636 West Pike street, Clarksburg.
Until three days ago, when he became seriously ill, he could recall vividly of events during important engagements of the States war. For seven weeks, however, he had been in failing health, having come here March 29 from his farm near Rinehart to reside with his grandson. Most interesting of his recollections were the Battle of Bull Run, that is, to the listeners, for it was in this battle that he suffered serious wounds. A bullet struck him in the leg during the battle and someone cut him on the hand with a bayonet. Mr. Swiger was 25 years of age when he enlisted in the Union service at the start of the Civil war, in 1861, and remained a member of the army throughout the war. A cavalryman, he acquired a great love for horses and only six months ago continued to ride regularly. Relatives said they saw him ride at top speed over a half-mile stretch of road exactly two years before his death. Alert in the saddle, they said he was the marvel of the Rinehart countryside. Relatives had hoped he would survive to participate in the Memorial Day activities here this year.
A member of one of the county's most distinguished families, Mr. Swiger had spent most of his lifetime near Rinehart. He was a native, however, of Doddridge county, having been born Feb. 28, 1836, near Center Point. Mr. Swiger's first wife, Alice A. (Hooper) is deceased, and his second wife, Mrs. Genie Swiger resides in Salem.
Mr. Swiger was the father of nine children, five of whom survive as follows: Mrs. Bitha Price of Smithfield, Mrs. Rettie Postlewait of Jacksonburg, Mrs Rosie Hutson of Salem, and Buck and Ben Swiger, both of Rinehart.
Mr. Swiger's death breaks up a chain of five living generations. He leaves 75 grandchildren, 130 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren. The body will remain at the Lynch funeral home here until 1:30 p.m. Monday, when it will be taken to the church at Center Point for services at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be made there, probably with military rites."
First married Alice A. Hooper.
Secondly, married "Genie" Virginia Byrd Ash Swiger (1865 - 1942)
