About William Emmel
William Emmel, aged German citizen, died in Salem Sunday evening June 2, at 8:20 p.m.
William Emmel, the aged father of Mrs. J. Ostenberg, passed away at the home of his daughter in this city last Sunday evening in the 91st year of his life, being 90 years and 22 days old. He had been very feeble since November 1906, but was a patient sufferer and had looked peacefully forward to the time when he would be called from this earth to a better and happier dwelling place. He leaves to mourn his loss eight children, also twenty-four grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
William Emmel was born in Nassau, Germany, May 11, 1817. He came to America in 1846 and was united in marriage in Platteville, Wisconsin to Miss Margaret Schaffer in 1847. To this union were born 13 children, five boys and eight girls. Three of the boys and two girls and the mother are dead, the latter having died September 2, 1891.
Only three of his daughters, Mrs. J. Ostenberg, Mrs. J. Hall, and Mrs. F. Campbell were able to attend the funeral, it being impossible to get word to the other sons and daughters.
One son, Gustav Emmel and family reside at Alberta, Canada. Levi Emmel and and family at Patterson, North Dakota, two daughters, Lizzie and Emma Emmel at Patterson North Dakota, and another daughter, Mrs. T. Palmer at Summit, South Dakota.
Mr. Emmel was confirmed in the German Presbyterian Church and remained a faithful member thereof until death.
The funeral services were held at the M.D. Church Tuesday afternoon and the remains were laid to rest in the Wildwood Cemetery beside that of his wife.
Dearest father how we miss thee, Since thy feeble voice we hear no more Thou hast gone to meet thy dear companions at the golden shore. There we soon shall meet thee, Where sad parting is no more.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Jan 24 2021, 17:13:47 UTC
