Graham Name Study, Williamsburg, South Carolina

A Patriot of the American Revolution for SOUTH CAROLINA with the rank of LIEUTENANT. DAR Ancestor # A046836

From "Grahams of Horry County" by Harmon Dock Graham:

....the first John Graham had a son named William Graham (1748-1824), brother of the second John Graham mentioned above. He was married to Elizabeth Bellamy and one of their sons was William Bellamy Graham. The following is a copy of an article in a Georgetown, South Carolina newspaper, telling of his (William Bellamy's) untimely death.

WINYAH OBSERVER Georgetown, S. C., \Vednesday, November 25, 1846

"Casualty - - Mr. William B. Graham, of Horry, came to town on Thursday last in a four oared boat to procure some family supplies, and departed again at an early hour the same evening. The wind was high and his boat so heavily laded that she filled after getting into the bay near the old fort and immediately capsized. There were five persons in the boat and of the number a stranger by the name of Smith, who was allowed his passage up the Waccamaw, on his way to Richmond, Virginia. Mr. Graham and Mr. Smith were drowned. The other white men and two negroes were saved. Mr. Graham was a very respectable and influential citizen of Horry, and has left surviving him a wife and seventeen children. Three or four of his sons came down the river on Sabbath last in search of his body. Our bay is a dangerous sheet of water in bad weather, and it should not be attempted to be crossed in any other than large and good boats. The annual casualties should be a warning to strangers and all." Note: William Bellamy Graham's body was found and he was buried in the Old Graham Cemetery on Mitchell Swamp."
