- ******************************************************** [St Johnsbury Caledonian, Fri. March 28 1879] "FATAL ACCIDENT.--On Monday of last week Will Labay went out on his first trip as fireman. Near South Barton the train broke apart between the first freight car and the tender. The engine was backed slowly, and Labay stood on the rear of the tender to hand a link to engineer Shorey who was to do the coupling, when the throttle of the engine flew back, letting the engine violently against the car. Labay was caught just above the hips. He was taken to his home at Lyndonville where, after great suffering, he died on Thursday. He was about 22 years old and was unmarried.--Monitor." [Lyndonville, The Vermont Union, Friday March 28 1879] "--W. J. Labay, who was injured on the cars at Barton last week Monday died in this village the following Friday, about 21 years old. His parents wish to tender their heartfelt thanks to the railroad boys who so tenderly cared for him and showed their sympathy by attendance at the funeral."
