William Macomber (1610-1670) is the first Macomber Patriarch of record to settle in the New World.[1]

William was christened on 25 Mar 1610, at the Anglican Church of St. Mary in Bridport, Dorset, England. He was the son of John Macomber and Edith Locke. On 16 Jan 1634/5, William married Priscella Ursulla Thomas (1618-1680) in the Anglican Church of St. Mary in Bridport, Dorset, England. Priscella went by the name of Ursulla. William and Ursulla were the parents of eight children, including Thomas Macomber (1635-1711) and William Macomber (1645-1711). William and Ursulla were members of the Church of England as shown by church records.[2]

In the spring of 1638, at the age of 28, William, along with his wife, Ursulla, his son, Thomas, and his younger brother, John (1613-1688), sailed to America. William and family settled in Plymouth Colony, and John settled initially on the island of Aquidneck, which became the Province of Rhode Island. John later settled in the town of Taunton in Plymouth Colony where he remained until his death in 1688.

“Will'm Maycumber, of Dorchester, cooper, is lycensed to dwell within this gov'ment, at Plymouth or elsewhere, upon the testy-mony of his good behavior hee hath brought with him." Plymouth Colony Records, Vol. I. p. 82.

This is the first mention of William Macomber in America. The testimony of good behavior is likely to have been obtained from the person with whom he served his apprenticeship in learning the trade of a cooper. The date of the above record is April 2 1638.

William Macomber died age 60 at Marshfield, Plymouth Colony, New England on 27 May 1670. An inventory of his estate was “exhibited to the court held at Plymouth in New England the seventh day of June Anno 1670 on the oaths of Ursilla Maycomber, Thomas Maycomber, and Mathew Maycomber."[3]

(New York, Association for the Promotion of Scholarship in Genealogy). Jane visited the Church of England archives located in Dorchester, Dorset, England and noticed that there were numerous entries of the Macomber surname in the records of the Anglican Church of Saint Mary located in Bridport, Dorset, England. She had previously noticed that the Macomber surname was prevalent in early Plymouth Colony records; therefore, Jane copied all of the Macomber entries noted in the church of Saint Mary’s record, and her findings were subsequently published in The Genealogist in 1981.
