William Mobbs b.1763 Middlesex England, was convicted along with his Brother-in-law William Bateman of stealing 600 pounds weight of Saltpetre valued at 48 Pounds the property of the Sovereign Lord the King and laying them to be the property of Fdmund Hill Esq. William Mobbs was sentenced to transportation for 7 years and William Bateman for 14 years. William Mobbs spent 7 months in prison and 15 months on a prison hulk at Portsmouth before boarding the 796 ton ship Barwell for the voyage to Australia. The ship arrived in Port jackson 5/18/1798 after a journey of 192 days.
