He moved from Somerset County, Maryland to Prince William County, Virginia, ca. 1735, where he married Eleanor Peyton.
On May 20, 1740, William Powell and Ellen (Eleanor) his wife, of Prince William County, Virginia, planter, deeded to Thomas Benston, of Somerset County, Maryland, 100 acres Exchange and all of William's share of Greenfield not previously sold. [Somerset Co. Deeds 20, p. 181]. William Powell patented a large tract of land in Loudoun Co., Virginia.
His will was dated February 24, 1787 and was probated in court on June 2, 1788, in Prince William County, Virginia. He named his wife- Elinor and children: Leven Powell, Frances Elliot, Margaret Bristoe, William Powell, Peyton Powell, Sarah Powell, and Elizabeth Powell; and granddaughter Sarah Powell, daughter of Leven Powell. Executors: wife- Elinor and sons- Leven Powell and William Powell. Witnesses: William Matthis, James
Aris, Ailsey Hatmen, Thos. Burnett, and John Brett.
