Biography

Laurel Logan: from http://www.ripsplace.net/ripfamly.asp

In 1638 WILLIAM RIPLEY with his wife, two sons and two daughters, came from Hingham, Norfolk County, England, and settled at Hingham, Mass.

He married a second wife, Elizabeth, widow of Thomas Thaxter, Sept. 29, 1654, and died July 20, 1656. His widow married John Dwight, of Dedham, Jan. 30, 1658, and died July 17, 1660.

In his will, which is dated June 30, 1656, he mentions only his sons. He was admitted a Freeman May 18, 1642. His town lot which he drew in 1638, contained four acres, and is on the main street Lower Plain, or Hingham Centre. The house of one of his descendants, Ebed Ripley, now stands upon it. 'We find that Hingham was simply the point of his departure from England. The records of the Parish Church at Hingham have been "carefully examined from 1600, when they commence, to 1638, and the name Ripley does not once occur, nor is any one of the name known in Hingham, or its vicinity." The company of emigrants appears to have been made up at Hingham, and William Ripley must have come from some other place and joined it. We have not been able to discover the place of his residence in England.

  • RIPLEY This name falls within the class known as local surnames, and is derived from one of three places in England called Ripley, situated respectively in the counties of Surrey, Derby and Yorkshire.
  • ( I ) William Ripley, who is thought to have come from Windham, a few miles from Hingham, England, came to Hingham, Massachusetts, in 1638. He was accompanied by his wife, two sons and two daughters. He received a grant of four acres of land at Hingham Centre, a large part of which is still owned by his descendants. His house was on Main street near the training field. The date of birth of William Ripley is not known. He died July 20, 1656. The date of his first wife's death is not known, but he married (second) in 1654, Elizabeth, widow of Thomas Thaxter, who after his death married, January. 1658, John Dwight, of Dedham. William Ripley's will, made June 30, 1656, proved January 24, 1657, mentioned only widow and sons John and Abraham. No mention is made of daughters, only one of whom, Sarah, is known to us by name.
  • ( II ) John, son of William Ripley. was born in England, came to America with his father, and died February 3, 1684. He resided at Hingham, where he was made freeman May 14. 1656. He resided on the paternal homestead. His will was made January 21. 1684, and proved March 27, 1684. He married, about 1654, Elizabeth Hobart, who was born about 1632, died March 26, 1692. Her father was Rev. Peter Hobart, of Hingham, who graduated B. A. from Magdalen College, England, in 1625, and was pastor of the First Church of Hingham in 1635. Elizabeth Hobart came with her parents and three brothers in 1635. John and Elizabeth Ripley were the parents of six sons and one daughter: John, Joshua, Jeremiah, Josiah, Peter, Rebecca and Hezekiah.

  • The Ripleys of New Hampshire and their Massachusetts progenitors are for the most part descended in common from one immigrant, who arrived early in the colonial period, and his progeny are to be met with in every state in New England and many other sections of the country.
  • ( I ) William Ripley with his wife, two sons and two daughters, came from Hingham, Norfolk county, England, about the year 1638 and settled in Hingham, Massachusetts, where he was made a freeman May 18, 1642. His widow took a third husband in the person of John Dwight, of Dedham, January 20, 1658, and she died July 17, 1660. The names of three of William’s children who accompanied him from England were: John, Abraham and Sarah, but that of the other daughter does not appear in the records. One of his grandsons settled in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and another located in Plimpton, that state, but the name of the latter cannot now be ascertained.
  • ( II ) John (1), eldest child of William Ripley, was born in England and came to America with his parents in 1638. He resided on the paternal acres at Hingham Centre, and died February 3, 1684.
