About William 'Guillermo' Smith Gorferey

COLONEL WILLIAM SMITH

At the Second Battle of Carabobo, 06/24/1821 was amongst the Major Chiefs of Staff of the Second Division led by Brigadier General Manuel Cedeño, of the Boyaca Battalion, under the command of Colonels Flegel (Ludwig FLEGEL VON SITZENBURG) and himself.

He survived this battle.

It is believed he stayed in Venezuela and pursued business ventures later on in his life as a citizen, married, and was Ambassador in Venezuela to Great Britain, Scotland and Ireland.

He retired and died in Venezuela (April 12th, 1857).

Paez mentions him in his memoirs. They were very good friends. My source is purely from an autobiography of General José Antonio Páez. He mentions " Guillermo Smith", (page 257 /394, second volume, Ediciones Antartida) as "one of the English officers who volunteered for the Latin American Wars of independence. He was under my command in Apure, and for his courteousness and high esteem, never faked, of which many a time I had to appeal to his generous feelings, I always considered him my good friend".

He goes on to say he served as Minister of Finances (Ministro de Hacienda, or Chancellor of the Exchequer) during his second government ( c.1839 - 1843 ). He married a " distinguished lady from Valencia, Venezuela (Mercedes Vera Ascanio), and rendered invaluable services to his adopted motherland ".

Fue Ministro Interino de Hacienda y Relaciones Exteriores durante la segunda presidencia del General Paez.

Compadre, cuñado y compatriota del Coronel George Woodberry (1792-1833).
