Five brothers of the name of Taylor, --George, James, William, John, and Caufield--came from county Armagh, Ireland, and settled in Rockbridge, 1760, investing their money in lands and slaves. John was killed in battle, April 25, 1778. Caufield was taken prisoner, but liberated after the surrender of Cornwallis. The four surviving brothers lived in a fine valley at the head of Cedar and are buried there. The wife of William was Janet Paul, said to have been a sister to the famous John Paul Jones of the Revolution. Admiral Jones was a Paul and added the name of his foster parent to his surname by birth. George and James married daughters of Captain Audley Paul. The Pauls were conscientiously opposed to slavery, and imparted their scruples to the families of these two brothers. Stuart, one of the youngest of the fourteen children of James, freed the last of the Negroes in that branch of the family. In doing so he gave each freedman $50.

Little is known of Hugh Paul Taylor's early life. His father was James Taylor, one of five brothers who emigrated from Ireland's County Armagh to Rockbridge County, Virginia, in 1760. The Taylor brothers speculated in land and slaves from their family homestead near Rockbridge Baths. James and his brother George married daughters of well-known Virginia Indian fighter Captain Audley Paul. Another brother William married Janet Paul, the sister of famed naval officer and Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones.

Many genealogists claim that the English and Irish TAYLORs are no relation. This is not true.

The FAULKNER family is said to be descended from Edward TAYLOR 1216-1272 (FAULKNER).

Many of the TAYLORs in England, related to Dr. Rowland TAYLOR who was martyered 1555, fled to Ireland. In 1538 Robert TAYLOR of Rothbury, England, apparent brother of Dr. Rowland TAYLOR, went to Ireland. In 1668 these TAYLORs were using the same Coat of Arms as the English TAYLORs.

John O. HART in Irish Pedigree spoke of the "TAYLOR cloth Making Guild of Ireland 1610."

In 1607 a rebellion in Ireland led by the Earl of Tyronne was crushed by the British and his lands confiscated.

In 1609 King James I authorized a British Colony to be established in Ireland in Counties Armagh, Cavan, Donegal, Farmanagh, Londonderry and Tyronne, all originally held by the Earl of Tyronne.

The Londonderry lands were given to the wealthy Merchantile Guilds of England, such as Salters, Goldsmiths, Ironmongers and Merchant Tailors (TAYLORs). These guilds supplied money for the settlement and in 1610 settlers were sent from England to occupy the land.

The Merchant TAYLOR settlement at Macosquin, Ireland is the best documented and best preserved with detailed plans filed in London, England.
