About William Alfred Throckmorton, Sr.
Taught in Greene County schools. Was the Elementary Principal in the West Greene School District, overseeing Graysville, Aleppo and New Freeport Elementary Schools.
William A. Throckmorton , 85, of Waynesburg, died at 5 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2009 , in Southwest Regional Medical Center, Waynesburg, after an eight-month illness.
He was born Saturday, July 28, 1923, in Waynesburg, a son of Robert L. Throckmorton Sr. and Ella Watson Throckmorton .
Mr. Throckmorton was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Waynesburg, where he was a member of Lamplighters Sunday School Class.
He was a World War II veteran, having served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a pilot. He served in China and Burma and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross twice and the Air Medal three times.
Mr. Throckmorton was a member of James Farrell American Legion Post 330 and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793, both of Waynesburg.
He was a graduate of Center Township High School and of Waynesburg College Class of 1952. He received his master of arts degree from Syracuse University in 1957 with additional graduate work from the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University and West Virginia University.
Mr. Throckmorton taught for 10 years in several Waynesburg schools and was principal of North Ward School in Waynesburg. He was elementary principal of West Greene School District for 25 years from 1962 until his retirement in 1987. While working as principal, he was referred to as "Mr. T." Following his retirement, he served on West Greene School Board.
He enjoyed woodworking, watching football and fishing.
His wife of 64 years, Sue Murdock Throckmorton , with whom he eloped to Winchester, Va., on July 18, 1942, died August 23, 2006.
Surviving are three daughters, Carol and husband Paul Kraft of Waynesburg, Jan and husband Timothy Bergen of Monroe, Ohio, and Joyce Poag of Waynesburg; three grandchildren, Traci and husband Dan Seto, Angela Poag and Brian and wife Shannon Throckmorton ; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Seto, twins Matthew and Noah Seto, Kaili Seto and Alexys Throckmorton ; a sister, Katherine Toothman of Waynesburg; and several nieces and nephews.
Deceased, in addition to his parents and wife, are a son, William Throckmorton , who died April 13, 1987; and a brother, Robert L. Throckmorton Jr., who died November 2, 1972.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in Milliken and Throckmorton Funeral Home Inc., Daryl L. Throckmorton , owner/director, 197 North Maiden Street, Waynesburg, where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 11, with the Rev. John Poling and Harry Rich officiating.
