About William Veazey

William's will was filed for probate in 1845 in Granville County, NC, WB-16 page 246. William and his wife, Nancy Hester, are buried in marked graves on "Veazey Ridge" in an old Veazey Cemetery on the old Huff Road in present day Butner, NC.

William's is the first generation discovered to date that had engraved tombstones in this oldest Veazey cemetery. His son, Joseph H Veazey and his wife and son are also buried in marked graves in this family burying ground. One stone commemorates two of his granddaughters, the daughters of Alfred Moore and Margaret F Umstead Veazey. Since these parents are buried in the newer Veazey cemetery located directly behind John Umstead Hospital, it could be stated that the newer cemetery was started after the death of these two children.

Older graves were marked with only fieldstones. There are many unmarked graves evident in this cemetery from the indentations in the earth and the pattern or layout of the graves. This leads one to the assumption that the older two generations of the Veazey family who migrated to Granville County, NC are buried here as well. Other members of the Veazey family are buried in several of the other family cemeteries located on the Butner reservation.

William is the progenitor of most of the Veazey/Veasey family who are living in the Granville/Durham County NC area in the 1990s. One of his sons, Fielding, migrate to AR. Ann Veazey Davis; initial research on the Granville County branch of the family came from the Durham Sun April 1942 edition, in articles written by Ben Patrick. Ben interviewed many persons who were being displaced b the building of Camp Butner who have long since departed this world. Granville County Records round out a very complete picture of this family group.
