About Willoughby S Merkel
Willoughby was the son of Benjamin and Catharine Scharadin Merkel. At the age of 25 years, Willoughby disappeared from Berks County and reemerged 25 years later in Napa Calif. after receiving word that his father was dead. After some financial issues and fighting with family over his inheritance back in PA, Willoughby, also known as Pennsylvania Bill by his friends in California, hanged himself in an old barn on the property where in lived. He was never seen by his family after his disappearance and only had letters back and forth. Note: Reading Eagle Jan 16, 1881
