Dallas Morning News April 17, 1898 p.20: "Fort Worth Student Won" One of the University Students gets the State Oratorical medal. Winner of the Oratorical Contest Fort Worth Tex, April 16- The fifth annual contest of the State Oratorical Association of Texas was held at Trinity university, Tehuacana, last night. This association is composed of seven institutions, as follows, together with the names of the orator from each school and the subject of his production: "Puritan vs. Cavalier," D.K.Porter, Southwestern; "Uncrowned Kings," W.B.Beard, Trinity; "Savonarola," Wilmot T. Smith, Fort Worth university; "The Epic of Liberty," Minor L Moore, Baylor; "Individuality vs. Environments," J. Frank Pruit, Add-Ran; "Character," J.L.Spiller, A. and M.; "A Coming Issue," John A. Williams, Austin university. The contest was held in the chapel of Trinity university, where delegations from the different schools had assembled, making an audience of nearly 600 people. It was the unanimous verdict that this was the strongest contest of the five held. Fort Worth university, who last year (her first year in the association), at Waco carried off first honors, was again present with the largest visiting delegation to cheer her orator, Mr. Wilmot T. Smith, in his struggle. All during the day they had stirred Tehuacana with their yells and songs and had reached fever heat. When the decision was announced, awarding the beautiful diamond medal to Smith, pandemonium reigned interspersed with yells and songs. At different stations from Tehuacana to Fort Worth people cheered the winning delegation and when they arrived at Fort Worth were met by several hundred students and citizens with carriages decorated with the gold and the blue and escorted in triumph through the streets to the university. Mr. Wilmot T. Smith, the winning orator, is in his 21st year, lives at Blanket, Tex. For the past three years he has been a student of Fort Worth university, where he ranks sophomore in the classical course. His work has been recognized in his selection as tutor in Greek for next year. The contest is to be held at the A. and M. college next year. These were selected as officers for the ensuing year: Ramsey of Trinity, president; Kyle of A.and M., vice president; Steere of Fort Worth university, secretary.
