About Yeta Leah Safern
Yetta Lea was born in Galicia in 1888. She married her uncle, Zvi Hersh after he lost his first wife and was left with four small children, who were taken in by their mother’s family. She first gave birth to a girl, who did not survive, and then Morris, Berney, Fanny, Zev and Yaakov. She raised her family by herself when Zvi Hersh supported the family with a job that took him away from home for months at a time. Also, Yetta, Yitzchak and Regina moved with their grandparents from Vienna to Berlin. In 1930 the family moved to the United States after Zvi Hersh secured entrance visas for her and the children. They were met in New York by Chaim Weinglass (the son of Yisrael Meshulam Zalman’s sister Mindel). In New York they struggled through the depression years but they managed to raise a devoted family. They also were able to bring Yitzhak and his family and Regina and her family from Palestine to New York, when conditions were very difficult in Palestine. As the years passed and her children grew, Yetta was an active member of Mizrachi Women in New York and president of the Bronx chapter. Her devotion to public causes influenced many, including her daugher-in-law Millie Safern, who later followed Yetta’s example and joined various Jewish women’s groups. She made a point of being on the first ship from New York to Palestine after WWII. As it was a non-kosher cargo ship she brought her own provisions. She loved to tell how the one rabbi who traveled on this ship called her the “Lefele” (spoon in Yiddish) when he came to borrow a kosher dish or spoon from her. She suffered from cancer in her later years and passed away in her home in 1967. She is buried in New York alongside her husband and brother.
