About Boruch (Bernie) Safern

Bernie (Baruch), was born in 1916 in Berlin. His father was a mashgiach on the Bremen Lines and was frequently away from home, and during World War II he was “stuck” in Berlin. After the war he was traveling again and Bernie spent most of his childhood without his father. After moving to New York in 1930, he learned English quickly and went to high school, but started working right afterwards. His older brother Morris got him a job in the fur trade, where he worked until he was drafted into the army in 1941. He was glad to be drafted to fight Hitler and to get out of the fur business. He met Max Tauber in the army and they became close friends. Through Max he met his wife Sara, who was born in Germany and had escaped Hitler when she was sent to England with the Kindertransport. She was able to immigrate to America, where she met Bernie. They married in 1948.
