About Zalman of Postelberg

Posselberg (פאסלבערג) is the Jewish name for the town of Postoloprty in North West Bohemia. The German name of the town is Postelberg.

Zalman of Postelberg was wounded in the Massacre which took place in Česká Lípa (Böhmisch-Leipa) on November 28 1744 (4th Tevet 5505), and died 5 days later. Details about the massacre can be found in the article by Josef Bergl "Der Judenmord in Böhmisch-Leipa am 9. Dezember 1744" (The discrepancy of 11 days in the date is a result of confusion between the Julian and Gregorian Calendars), in Jahrbuch der Gesellschaft für Geschichte der Juden in der Čechoslovakischen Republik, Prague, 1930, pp. 241-284. Zalman of Postelberg is mentioned there on page 274, #21.

It is commonly assumed that Zalman was a son of Rabbi Asher Anshel Wiener of Prague, but there is no evidence for this. See detailed analysis of the question in the attached Hebrew article by Joseph Kwadrat, "The lineage of Rabbi Yehoshua Freund of Carei (Kroli)". On the contrary, there is evidence that his father was named Eliezer.

Zalman probably had a descendant, but not neccessarily by the male line, Rabbi Asher Anshel Wiener, Rabbi of Miskolc, Reb Asher Anchil Wiener ( ABD Miskolc) who did belong to the Wiener family.
