VERSHIRE, Vt.: originally a town in Orange County, Vt., referred to as grant Number 7.; then named Vershire before, for a time, being called "Ely" after the Ely Mining Company, which mined copper. The name of the actual town was changed back to Vershire in 1878. In 1883, in the 1ST KNOWN WORKERS STRIKE IN THE COUNTRY;when 200 miners seized the plant demanding back wages; five companies of the National Guard were called out to surpress the miners.

Vershire was; the commonly accepted explanation, was coined by the legislature, combining VER(mont) and New Hamp(SHIRE).

Zebulon Baldwin, son of David 1701 Baldwin and Abigail Burr, was b. in Spencer, Mass; was of Leicester, Mass when he married HANNAH LYON, dau. Jabez Lyon and his wife Urania, on July 15,1752. They lived a while in Spencer, Mass. before they removed to Vershire, Vt. According to the Worcester Mss, had the following children:

Frederick (d.unm), Zadoc (settled in Ohio, and is supposed to have been killed in Col. Miller's battle with the Indians), Elon, Asa, and one more.
