HISTORY:

Of Wherwell, Hants., England

Robert Talmage was born in England and came to America as a young man. In 1638 his uncle, John Talmage, of Newton Stacey, Hants, England, drew his will leaving Robert a legacy. On September 3, 1640, at Boston, Robert, with his brothers and brother -in-law signed a letter of attorney to Ralph King, of Watford, to get the money for them from the overseers.

On March 7, 1644, Robert was at Southampton, Long Island, living in the second ward where Thomas, Jr., also lived; Thomas, Sr.; lived in the first ward.

Robert next appears at New Haven, where Robert Tallmadge took the freeman's oath, July 1, 1644. In 1649 he was a married man. It is supposed that he married in 1648. His wife was Sarah Nash, who as born in England and was probably the third child of Thomas Nash and Margery Baker. She was living in 1687 when Major John Nash left her, "the widow Talmage", a legacy. See the Nash Family of New Haven Conn.

Robert Tallmadge (MS 1150 History of the Tallmadge Family)

Robert's descendants have retained the original spelling of the name and seems to be the most numerous. Robert in 1644 moved to New Haven, Connecticut, and married Sarah, daughter of Major Nash, having five children.

One of his sons by the name of John was the progenitor of the branch of the family residing in Dutches and Rensaler Counties, New York, and hence the members of the family who are known in Fairfield and in Franklin Counties, Ohio. This John in 1686, married Abigail Bishop, daughter of Annna and James. His son James was a member of the Connecticut Legislature twenty years, and was Captain of a military company and also on of the original projectors of the Grammar School. He was married twice to Hannah Harrison, July 1, 1713, and to Mary Aling, July 5, 1744.
