The cemetery was established in 1848. It is also known as Coop Cemetery. The Coop family buried here were the first white settlers of Jefferson County in the 1830's, and the son William Henry Coop (1836-1915) was the first white child born in Jefferson County. The Coop family was instrumental in the settling of pioneers in this area, and were influential in the policies and commerce at the time. This is duly noted in the histories written about the establishment of Jefferson County, and not just a casual observation.
