About this project

This project is designed to place all the Barry families in South Africa together to see under which progenitor they belong and to collect research information, discussions, and queries etc. There is also a Barry DNA project that can be found at www.familytreedna.com

How to Participate

If you have an ancestor who was a Barry

  1. Get yourself added as a collaborator
  2. Navigate to your ancestor's profile
  3. Under the "More Actions" link choose "Add to Project"
  4. Select the Barry project

How to add a link is explained in the attached document - Adding links to Geni profiles to projects.

Optional:

  • Include in the "About Me" section of each person a brief biographical sketch of their lives. Also include their Settler party and ship name and arrival date if known
  • Include a photograph/painting of your ancestor if one exists.
  • Your ancestor's profiles should be marked as "public" and not "private".
  • All included profiles should include full identifying information including birth and death dates as well as birth and death locations. It would also be very helpful if the immediate family of your pioneer ancestor, (their parents, siblings and children) profiles were public profiles also.
  • Do not make public any profiles of living people. NOTE: All Barrys included on this project will have their profiles editable by other geni.com collaborators of this project. The object of reproducing the list here is to see if these people can be located on Geni and perhaps develop trees from them. To take part in any project - you do need to first be a collaborator - so join the project. See the discussion Project Help: How to add Text to a Project - Starter Kit to get you going!

  • They were all part of the same family but came to South Africa as individuals and started their own families.

2. John Barry (1819 - 1903)

  • Immigrated ? Ireland?
  • Uncertain of his birthplace. One source says from Ireland the other born at high sea. (Does that mean at high sea on his way to South Africa? Then who was his father?)

3. William Walter Barry (1851 - 1927)

  • Immigrated between these dates - 10 November 1895 and 26 April 1897. He married his second wife, Mary Nash, when she was still a minor aged 20 at the Roman Catholic chapel of Mount Melleray Abbey, Cappoquin, Waterford, Ireland, on 10 November 1895. William's occupation is given as Draper and Mary's as Servant: possibly in William's own household. His first wife, Mary Agnes Whelan, had died on 20th January 1894, probably in childbirth, after bearing William ten children of whom seven survived infancy. Most of their numerous descendants are living in Ireland today. William was born Richard William Barry (Walter appears as an occasional epithet) ""Richard William Barry"" and baptised on 30 August 1851 at Mitchelstown, Co. Cork, Ireland. He married first, Mary Agnes Whelan, on 25th April 1876 at Ferns, Wexford, Ireland. His parents were Walter Barry (1814 - 1897) and Johanna Ryan (1814 - 1857). This branch of the Barry family lived variously in the counties of Cork, Tipperary, Waterford and Wexford. They are descended from James Barry of Gortroe, Co. Cork who was born in 1690. He was Richard William's gt gt gt grandfather.

4. John Barry (b. 1777)

5. John Barry (b.1797)

6. Michael Barry (b. 1798)

7. Thomas Christopher Barry(c.1822 - d.1909)

  • Immigrated (I would guest about 1845) England
  • In initial research it was thought that he was the son of William Berry a 1820 Settler.(a Descendant of William Berry did do a DNA test, but is not a match )
  • According to his and his wife's will and death notice, their surname was Baray.
  • DNA tests does not match any Barry persons in ftDNA Y DNA database, but to Bryan, O'Brien and O'Neill from Ireland.

8. William Barry (c.1862 - c.1930)

9. John Barry (24 Jun 1799 - 17 Sep 1872).DN

10 John Barry (c.1820/or 17 April 1791 - d. 09 July 1855 )
