Please add ONLY people who have died as a result of Bladder Cancer.
If you have a person who has survived Bladder Cancer, please let me know & I will create a project for survivors. Thanks, (See: Medically Related Discussion) Patricia A Scoggin (Anderson).
Bladder cancer is any of several types of cancer arising from the epithelial lining (i.e., the urothelium) of the urinary bladder which is a hollow organ in the lower abdomen that stores urine. Bladder cancer begins when cells in the urinary bladder start to grow uncontrollably. As more cancer cells develop, they can form a tumor and spread to other areas of the body.
The most common type of bladder cancer recapitulates the normal histology of the urothelium (the innermost lining of the bladder) and is known as transitional cell carcinoma or more properly urothelial cell carcinoma. As the cancer grows into or through the other layers in the bladder wall, it becomes more advanced and can be harder to treat.
Over time, the cancer might grow outside the bladder and into nearby structures. It might spread to nearby lymph nodes, or to other parts of the body. (If bladder cancer spreads, it often goes first to distant lymph nodes, the bones, the lungs, or the liver.)
Symptoms:
- The most common symptom is blood in the urine. Other symptoms include:
- A frequent urge to urinate
- Pain when you urinate
- Low back pain
Treatments include surgery, biological therapy, radiation therapy and chemotherapy.
Epidemiology/Statistics
- Fewer than 200,000 US cases per year. This cancer typically affects older adults. It's usually diagnosed early, when it's still treatable. It's likely to recur, so follow-up tests are typically recommended. Bladder cancer is the 9th leading cause of cancer with 430,000 new cases and 165,000 deaths occurring in 2012.
- In 2017 an estimated 79,030 adults (60,490 men and 18,540 women) will be diagnosed with bladder cancer in the United States. Among men, bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer. Men are 4 times more likely than women to be diagnosed with the disease. In addition, incidence rates in white men are double those of black men.
- Bladder cancer mostly affects older people. Ninety percent (90%) of people with bladder cancer are older than 55, and the average age people are diagnosed with bladder cancer is 73.
- It is estimated that 16,870 deaths (12,240 men and 4,630 women) from this disease will occur this year. Among men, bladder cancer is eighth most common cause of cancer death.
- Worldwide -- Globally, in 2010, bladder cancer resulted in 170,000 deaths up from 114,000 in 1990.[48] This is an increase of 19.4%, adjusted for increase in total world population.
- US -- In the United States, bladder cancer is the fourth most common type of cancer in men and the ninth most common cancer in women. More than 50,000 men and 16,000 women are diagnosed with bladder cancer each year. Smoking can only partially explain this higher incidence in men. One other reason is that the androgen receptor, which is much more active in men than in women, plays a major part in the development of the cancer.
- UK -- Bladder cancer is the seventh most common cancer in the UK (around 10,400 people were diagnosed with the disease in 2011), and it is the seventh most common cause of cancer death (around 5,200 people died in 2012).
