Original Project

A. The first order of business is to detach Chaya Landau (Babad) from the Chanikas Hatorah and attach to his granchild Eliazer of Dubna. Still don't know who her mother was. -- (Repaired, thank you).

B. The next order is the Chanikas Hatorah's wife Dina. It appears that she was married to the Chanikas Hatorah, his grandchild Eliazer of Dubna, and Rabbi Naftali Hirsch פירות גינוסר. --(Repaired, thank you)

C. Another issue is Heschel/Lizers (wife of the Chanikas Hatorah). She seems to be the same person as Hesya Heschel. - (Merged, thank you)

D. R' Eliazer of Dubna had two conflicting years of death, 1641 and 1793, and neither makes any sense. His daughter Chaya was born 1695 (54 years after father's death?) and died 1740 (53 years before her father died?). Also, his father Rabbi Isaachar Berish was born 1630 (11 years before the death of his son?!) and died 1690 (102 years before his son?). See note directly below. (Repaired, thank you)

Information from "The Unbroken Chain", by Dr. Neil Rosenstein, Vol 2, Page 715

There is a detailed discussion in a commentary LeDor VaDor, by R. Naftali Braunfeld, appended to R. Jekutiel Aryey Kamelhar's Dor Deah, New York, 1953 (p.4-5 end). Here Bruanfeld shows how numerous old sources are in error by making Eliezer, A.B.D. Dubno, son of Heschel and not the son of Issachar Berish, son of Heschel.
He further shows that it was Eliezer's daughter, Chaya, who married Judah Landau (father of Ezekiel, Noda BiYehuda) and not the oft repeated error that Chaya married Judah's father, Zvi Hirsch Landau.
Kamelhar in M.H.D. agrees with Braunfeld's conclusion. However Braunfeld does not raise the question of possibility that there was both a son of Heschel and a grandson of Heschel with the same name, and could even have both been A.B.D. Dubno, although older sources could have become confused.
For this reason both Eliezer's are being preserved in this book. See the Landau Family Pedigree. R. Joseph Lewinstein in HaEshkol, volt, p.188-9 does not include Eliezer as a son.

RE: Chanikas Hatorah

FROM: Marc Binyamin Dana-Picard

First thank you Shulem and Ori for having set up a project to repair the mess around Chanikas Hatorah.
Below are further problems that require attention.

1. Among the data I got several years ago from Werner Frank,
Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel of Crakow (Chanikas Hatorah) was married twice. ( See reply below )

2. The second wife was Hesia ISSERLIS (1580-ca 1649) who bore him several chidren, in particular Issachar Berish and Mordechay. ( See reply below )

3. His father Jakov LUBLINER appears in GENI as Yaakov Hirsch Babad Lubliner - Heschel. How is that? (See reply below)

4. According to Werner Frank, Issachar Berish was married to a daughter of Joshua Teomim. (See reply below)

5. According to you in GENI his wife was Roza Jalisch (Yalish) daughter of Rabbi Mordechai Yalish. (See reply to Q4 below)

6. Dinah Zaak who according to you in GENI was Jakov LUBLINER's sister. Werner Frank answered me that he could not find a proof of this brother-sister link. (See reply below)

7. There are other inconstituancies with Werner's tremendous work (like the use of the names BABAD and HESCHEL, more or less spouses and children). (See reply below)

8. Look at the tree of Esther Hadassa ESKELES: i.e.. http://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000009203670684 She has a sister, Mrs Yehoshua Lieb, who among other children, has a son and a daughter married together . . . Weird? (See reply below)

Collaborators please list suggestions to begin process of repair.

Step-by-step Repair Suggestions:

Q1:
Among the data I got several years ago from Werner Frank,
Rabbi Avraham Yehoshua Heschel of Crakow (Chanikas Hatorah)
was married twice.

Q2: The second wife was Hesia ISSERLIS (1580-ca 1649) who bore him several chidren, in particular Issachar Berish and Mordechay. (Added Hesia as 2nd wife)

Answer Q1, & Q2.
There were two wives each with issue, and so we need to add the first wife and move some of the children across to her as per the list below.
As per "The Unbroken Chain", by Dr. Neil Rosenstein. p. 715

When R. Naftali Katz died in 1649, R. Heschel became his successor having waited for only five years for the position since his father's death. He had also lost his first wife, the daughter of R. Moses Lazers of Brest, and remarried his second cousin, Dinah, the former wife of R. Naftali Katz. - Note 1. D.K., p93 et seq.; AEA,; HaEshkol, 1902, vol. 4, p. 188 et seq.
Issue from his first wife: Hesia ISSERLIS Bat Moses Lazers / Isserlis]

Issue from his second wife: Dinah Katz

-----------------------------------------

Q3. His father Jakov LUBLINER appears in GENI as Yaakov Hirsch Babad Lubliner - Heschel. How is that?

Eliminated "Babad" from name as the addition of Babad was only introduced with Issachar's son Yitzchak Krakover. See Neil Rosenstein's note. Jakob Lubliner, simply means Jakob from Lublin Heschel.
Isaac A.B.D. Brody, Brzezany ("Saul Wahl" by Dr. Neil Rosenstein, page 273) Many of his descendants adopted the name of "Babad, (B.A.B.A.D. - sons of the Av Beth Din). "The Unbroken Chain", by Dr. Neil Rosenstein.

-----------------------------------------

Q 4 -
According to Werner Frank, Issachar Berish was married to a daughter of Joshua Teomim? . (Wrong Joshua Teomim link.) - Correct R. Joshua Feiwel Teomim.

A4 & A5
Re Dr. Neil Rosenstein, "The Unbroken Chain" it appears that Issachar Berish of Cracow was married twice, and possibly three times!
See Source AJH 3 >"The Unbroken Chain", by Dr. Neil Rosenstein. i.e..

-----------------------------------------

Q 6 Dinah Zaak] who according to you in GENI was Jakov LUBLINER's sister.

A 6 Dinah Zaak now appears as a sister of Avraham Heschel, ie. daughter of Jakob Lubliner instead of as his sister. (Has been corrected)

-----------------------------------------

Q 7 There are other inconstituancies with Werner's tremendous work (like the use of the names BABAD and HESCHEL, more or less spouses and children).

A 7
Yitzhak Heschel Babad. First member of the Heschel family to adopt the name of Babad. (B.A.B.A.D. - sons of the Av Beth Din) So we should remove Babad from all profiles before that.

-----------------------------------------

Q 8 Mrs Yehoshua Lieb, who among other children, has a son and a daughter married together . . . Weird?

A 8.
Thank you for pointing out this obvious error, which has been repaired. See tree
