The Chevra Lomdei Mishnah was a group of elite Torah scholars in Viseu de Sus, Romania (Felsovisso, Hungary or אויברווישוא). The history of the group spans over three generations in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The Chevra Lomdei Mishnah would meet 4 times a year for a siyum. At those siyums, the group would approve the membership of new members to the group. A majority of the pages of the pinkas discuss the proceedings of allowing new members to the group at such a siyum.
In addition, the members of the group would gather together the night before a bris milah of one of its members. They would also observe each other's yahrzeits. As a result, the pinkas lists the dates of birth and dates of death of many of its members and their children. This is especially valuable when there are no vital records.
For example, Nachman Shoel Shaul Fruchter was a central figure in the community of Viseu de Sus. His death date is relatively well known. To date, no genealogies have listed his birth date. However, since his father Rabbi Yehuda Aryeh Leib Fruchter was a member of the group, the group gathered together for the bris of the son Nachman Shaul. A birth date is provided for that occasion: 15 Elul 5608 (September 13, 1848).
The goals of this project are:
- To extract all relevant genealogical information from the pinkas of the chevra lomdei mishnah.
- To create a profile for all the members of the chevra lomdei mishnah.
- To include relevant images from the pinkas on the profiles of each of the members.
The pinkas (register) of the group has been preserved and is available online here: http://web.nli.org.il/sites/NLI/Hebrew/digitallibrary/pages/viewer....|FL26075884. The pinkas covers the years 1826-1907.
