Rostock, or the Hanseatic City of Rostock, is the largest city in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), northern Germany. The city stands on the estuary of the River Warnow into the Bay of Mecklenburg of the Baltic Sea. In the 11th century Polabian Slavs founded a settlement at the Warnow river called Roztoc (*ras-tokŭ, Slavic for "fork of a river"); the name Rostock is derived from that designation.

In 1251, the city became a member of the Hanseatic League. In the 14th century it was a significant seaport town with some 12,000 inhabitants, and the largest city in Mecklenburg. Ships that cruised the Baltic Sea were often times built constructed in Rostock.
In 1419, the University of Rostock was founded, the oldest university in continental northern Europe and the Baltic Sea area.

Rostock
Rostock, or the Hanseatic City of Rostock, is the largest city in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern), northern Germany. The city stands on the estuary of the River Warnow into the Bay of Mecklenburg of the Baltic Sea. In 2017, the town had a population of about 210,000, making it the third largest city on the German Baltic Coast. It has been, and remains to be as one of the largest ports in Germany.
The purpose of this project is to collect together people who have resided in Rostock, or having influenced the history of the town. You are welcome to join the project - you should join and contribute by adding the people of you know. Down below the description of the project, reasons why you should join and contribute are provided.
History
In the 11th century Polabian Slavs founded a settlement at the Warnow river called Roztoc (*ras-tokŭ, Slavic for "fork of a river"); the name Rostock is derived from that designation.
Hanseatic city
In 1251, the city became a member of the Hanseatic League. In the 14th century it was a significant seaport town with some 12,000 inhabitants, and the largest city in Mecklenburg. Ships that cruised the Baltic Sea were often times built constructed in Rostock.
In 1419, the University of Rostock was founded, the oldest university in continental northern Europe and the Baltic Sea area.

Rostock was originally part of the Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin which lasted from 1379 to 1815. From 1815 to 1918, it was part of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. With the end of World War I and subsequent abolition of the German Empire, the state was renamed as the Free State of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Since 1933, Rostock is a city from the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Why join the regional projects?
Well, we don' even know - yet - what the future will bring. Once here is enough people of the regional project, only the imagination limits what the data can be used to do and illustrate. But when the regional projects become more common, we already know something. By now, Finland has been quite thoroughly mapped, people have been active with the projects, which actually do not require much. Or anything. Just joining in. It's not much to ask, is it?
