Geschiedenis (History)

Door huwelijk met een 'jonkvrouwe van Echteld' verkreeg Bernard van Verschuer, die tevens de Wijenburg kocht en redde van de ondergang.

The lordship of Echteld is documented since 1271. The construction of its castle started around 1169. For about 500 years, the lordship and castle were held by the van Wijhe family. Through marriage, lieutenant-Admiral Willem van Wassenaer acquired the title an possessions in 1751, and kept it in his family for three generations. Subsequently, the van Balveren family inherited title an possessions in 1817. In 1928, the title was inherited by the van Verschuer family who also bought the castle and saved it from many years of neglect.
