Elmwood Cemetery was incorporated in 1865. On April 5, 1865, a board of managers was formed to create a new cemetery in the then Village of Sycamore. 18 acres of farm land was purchased from H. L. Boies at the southwest corner of the village boundaries. On May 24, 1865, the first 500 lots went open for sale.
On November 7, 1866, there was discussion to transfer ownership of the cemetery to the Village of Sycamore. However, nothing materialized from this, and today Elmwood Cemetery still remains a private corporation.
The most striking feature of the cemetery are the "Elmwood Cemetery Gates" a cast-iron structure marking the entrance to the cemetery. The gates are stamped with the year, "1865". It's not certain if the gates were actually there when the cemetery first opened, however most people today assume this to be true. The Elmwood Cemetery Gates were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
This cemetery is located on 901 South Cross Street, Sycamore, DeKalb County, Illinois.
