The purpose of this project is to have a platform where Potgieter descendants can share information, discuss problems and make enquiries.
Harmen Jansz Potgieter Stamvader/Progenitor
- Name Variations: Harman Jansz. During his lifetime he was always referred to as Hans Jansz van Noorthoorn. The surname Potgieter seems to have been first used, at the Cape, by his children. In the inventory drawn up after the death of Beletje Fredricksz in 1711, he is called Harmen Potgieter.

Origins
Die POTGIETER voorouers is deur Patrick van Griethuisen en Dr Ludwich Edel nagevors en terug gevolg tot by Bernd wat trou met 'n dogter van Heinrich KETELER. Hy kom van Essen, op die Ruhr, na Nordhorn wat in die Graafskap van Bentheim, Duitsland geleë is. In 1546 is sy naam in die Burgerboek daar ingeskryf en in 1577 word hy nog daar in 'n akte genoem. Sy skoonpa, Hynrich Keteler, of ook Kettel Hinrik genoem, woon omstreeks 1500 tot 1537 in Ossenhoek.
Essen (in Duitsland) is tot vandag toe nog beroemd vir die Ysterwerke en was daardie tyd ook reeds baie bekend vir die pot- en ketelgieters wat daarvandaan kom. Dit gee waarskynlik vir ons 'n goeie leidraad na die oorsprong van die van POTGIETER.
Berndt het sover bekend 3 kinders gehad. Kettel Hinrich POTGETER, of ook Kettelhinrich genoem, wat trou met Fenne HILLERINCK wat van Hesepe kom. Na wat bekend is het hulle geen nageslag nagelaat nie. Sy tweede seun was Kettel Hermann POTGETER. Hulle enigste bekende dogter was Kettel Grete POTGETER wat getrou het met Albert ROLOWES.
Kettel Hermann POTGETER, of ook Kettelhermann genoem, was getroud met Agnese SCHOLTEN, 'n dogter van Scholten VON BIMOLTEN, wat van Bimolten afkomstig is. Hulle woon op Ossenhoek, maar in die oorlogtyd woon hulle by sy stiefouers op die Scholten boerdery. Agnese was ook Nese of Gese genoem. Slegs een kind van hierdie huwelik Nesen Hermann POTTGETER wat ongeveer in 1590 gebore is, is bekend.
Hermann POTTGETER, ook genoem Nesen Hermann, waarskynlik so vernoem na sy moeder, Nese (Agnese). Hermann is ongeveer 1590 gebore en in 1667 word sy naam in Nordhorn aangetref as Hermann Pottgeter, burgermeester van Nordhorn. Hy het reeds voor die dertigjarige oorlog getrou met Tryne, die stiefdogter van Gerdt Arents. Hermann was ook lid van die Nordhorn skoenmakersgulde. Hulle het vier kinders gehad; Nesen Lambert POTGIETER die eienaar van 'n stuk grond in Pottkamp, Adeldorf, Gert POTGETER wat die eienaar van die "Faberhaus" in Schuttorf was, Hermann POTTGEITE wat in 1648 trou met 'n dogter van Swenne VON LODDEN, en Jan POTGIETER.
Jan (of Johannes) POTGIETER was gebore in Nordhorn, Wesfalen, Duitsland en trou in 1634 met Schwerne LODDEN, die dogter van Swenne VON LODDEN van Frensdorf . Sy was ook in Nordhorn gebore, in die jaar 1610. Jan was ook genoem Ossenjan of Kettel Johan.
