This project focuses on Jews from the town of Szczuczyn, located in what is now the Podlaskie Voivodeship of northeast Poland. Before WW2, Szczuczyn was in the Białystok province, and before WW1 in the Łomża gubernia (Lomza province) of the Russian Empire. Many immigration records of Jews who emigrated from Szczuczyn before WW1 will show their origin as either Russia or Poland.
This project doesn't aim to be a detailed resource for Szczuczyn—the resources listed below with links already provide that. Instead, this project will identify surnames of people with profiles here at Geni who were born, lived, or died in Szczuczyn, and provide links to the older members of those lineages represented here. The purpose is to serve as a resource for all descendants of Szczuczyn Jews, and especially ones trying to use genetic genealogy to identify distant cousins whose connection is through a Szczuczyn family.
There is a project "Lomza Towns and Families: Rajgrod, Szczuczyn, Grajewo and others" here at Geni that also includes towns near Szczuczyn. Many Szczuczyn families had close relatives living in nearby small towns like Radzilow, as well as in the nearby small city of Grajewo to the northeast and the large city of Lomza to the south.
The Polish towns of Szczucin and Szczecin are sometimes confused with Szczuczyn due to the similar spelling, so sometimes people whose profiles show they were born in Szczucin were really from Szczuczyn. Also, Szczuczyn is sometimes spelled with variations, including Shtutchin, Shtutsin, Shtusin, or Stuzin. The administrative district ("gmina") of Gmina Szczuczyn includes the town of Szczuczyn and also several other villages.

Szczuczyn Surnames
The names and links given in this section are not a complete list of people with profiles at Geni with a Szczuczyn, The goal is generally to provide just one link to each known lineage. Following this link will typically lead to more people from Szczuczyn (their relatives). Jose Gutstein has compiled an extensive list of surnames from Szczuczyn, only a fraction of which are currently represented at Geni. Where there is a Geni surname project known that specifically includes Poland or the region around Szczuczyn, a link to that project is provided. Last updated: 27 Jan 2018
