This project brings together all the Wapinski families of Poland and their relations. We seek to use traditional paper records and genetic genealogy to explore and identify possible connections between all the families surnamed Wapinski (and related spellings) in this region.
Most of the Wapinski families identified so far were originally living within or in the area of the city of Lomza. Specific cities and towns in which Wapinski family members were found include the cities Lomza and Grajewo, the large towns Szczuczyn, and Jedwabne (Janczewo), and the small villages Zakrzewo, Wąsosz, Mocarze (near Jedwabne), Pniewo (near Gać), and Korytki or Korytki Leśne.
Have a question for the Wapinski family community? Please feel free to post it to this project's discussion forum.

Known Lineage Founders
These aren't necessarily the oldest couple or person in a lineage (although they may be), but are ones whose several children are documented.
- Lejzor Herzk "Harry" Wapinski (b. 10 Mar 1845, Lomza, Podlaskie Voivodeship; d. 27 May 1918) and Fejga "Fannie" Rochel Wapinski (b. abt. 1843, Lomza, Podlaskie Voivodeship).Lejzor's father Szloma was born in Korytki or Korytki Leśne, Poland.
- Avraham Abremchik Wapinski (b. abt 1850, Grajewo, Podlaskie Voivodeship) and Frida Wapinski.
- Wolf Wapinski (b. abt. 1842, Zakrzewo, Grajewo County, Podlaskie Voivodeship; d. ??) and Chaja Perla Wapinski (b. 1846, Wąsosz, Grajewo County, Podlaskie Voivodeship; d. 1895, Wąsosz).
- Franciszek "Frank" Wapinski (b. Poland; d. Chicago, Illinois, USA) and Caroline Keller (b. Germany; d. 12 Feb 1955, Chicago, Illinois, USA).
There are some other Polish families that spell their surname "Wapiński" ("ń" with an acute mark over the "n"). It's not yet clear if they are in any way related to the families that use the "Wapinski" spelling.
News
The newest news for this project will be posted to this section. Older news will be moved to the "Wapinski project news" discussion, so that we have a record of progress there.
[14 Oct 2016] The news so far is... this new Wapinski Families of Poland project was created!
Connecting the Wapinski Families
JRI-Poland Records
There are around 110 historical records for Wapinski family members indexed by the JRI-Poland.org database. All database entries for historical records matching "Wapinski" (and related/Soundex matches) have been extracted into a Wapinski spreadsheet that is online here. That spreadsheet's first column "Geni Profile" provides links to Geni.com profiles if they have been identified as corresponding to that historical record. There are still many historical records in that set for which there is no Geni profile because it's not clear where that person fits in the known family trees. Have some ideas about that? Post it to our project's discussion forum!
Abraham and Wolf Wapinski
The father of Avraham Abremchik Wapinski was Yitzchok Moishe Wapinski, and the father of Wolf Wapinski was Yitzchok Moishe Wapinski. Given that Abraham and Wolf have similar birth dates and were born in the same general area, we can consider whether they might be brothers or first cousins.
The given name "Ick" or "Icko" (pronounced "Itsko") is a Polish-language version of the given name rendered "Isaac" in English, "Yitzchok" in Hebrew and "Itsik" in Yiddish. They all are the same name, just with different renderings. Therefore, we can make an initial guess that Abraham and Wolf were actually brothers, although there are currently no paper records that support this beside those showing that both fathers have names related to "Isaac."
However, genealogical DNA testing of their descendants might be able to reveal if they were brothers. The living descendants 65 and older are 3rd-great-grandchildren of their speculated common ancestor Issac, which would makes them 4th cousins between the two branches. Although only around 50% of 4th cousins will show detectable DNA matches, this is still within the ability of the technology to demonstrate the relation if it exists.
Other Online Trees
There are many other online genealogical trees that people have created for Wapinski families of Poland, located at MyHeritage.com, Ancestry.com and elsewhere. Links to some of them are given below. Some of the profiles at Geni.com were created based on research done by these other genealogists, which they have graciously made accessible.
Viewing some of the trees below may require that you have an account at the hosting website, although they are all "public" trees. "Private" trees, which can't be viewed without specific permission from the creator, aren't included here.
