LaBadie Family of Jamaica

Project Tags

This project is about the LaBadie family of Jamaica, which originated in Haiti, and ultimately from France.

Summary

According to family history, on the north coast of Haiti, one of the LaBadie plantation owner's sons married a Black woman, and the family disowned him. The son and wife relocated to Jamaica about 100 miles southwest. This happened just before the 1791 Slave Revolt? During and after the revolt, many slave owners and their slaves left to go to New Orleans, Louisiana.

Labadee (also Labadie) is a port located on the northern coast of Haiti. It is a private resort leased to the private company Royal Caribbean International until 2050.[1] Royal Caribbean International has contributed the largest proportion of tourist revenue to Haiti since 1986, employing 300 locals, allowing another 200 to sell their wares on the premises for a fee[2] and paying the Haitian government US$10 per tourist, increasing to US$12 in March 2015.

Etymology

The location is named after the marquis de La Badie, a Frenchman who first settled the area in the 17th century. The peninsula and a village were named Labadie.[12] The cruise company spells the name "Labadee" to make it easier for English-speakers to pronounce.[12]

From a historical perspective, it’s a repugnant notion. The cruise line’s private enclave of “Labadee®“ is a name that Royal Caribbean trademarked as a variation of Marquis de La’Badie who settled in Haiti in the 1600’s. That’s right, Marquis de La’Badie, the French slave owner, whose descendants fought against Henri Christophe and his army of former black slaves.

Royal Caribbean wasn’t thinking of the 1791 Slave Uprising or the Haitian revolution when its snabbed the 260 acres of sovereign Haitian land to create its own enclave. It ignored Haiti’s black national hero when it went about marketing its slice of Haiti. So why should Royal Caribbean be Henri Christophe - Haititrusted to be the steward of such historic sites when it already staked its presence on the island bearing the white de La’Badie slave owner name?
