I (Karl David Wright) have a number of DNA matches who overlap at around the 25% point of Chromosome 3. (This is not to be confused with the 50% position, which seems to have a wholly different origin.)
The first match lives in New South Wales, Australia, and it was pretty easy to rule out any other relationship than through her Ewing ancestor who'd come from Northern Ireland. That ancestor was named Ewing too, so her relationship with me can only be arranged in one way, given the genealogical distance inherent in the overlap. Here is the relationship.
Since the Northern Ireland parts are partly conjectural, it may be the case that I have wired the Ewing tree a bit too tightly. But I am satisfied that the overlap seen is consistent with the relationship.
For Pamela Watkins, the match is via her relatively close ancestor, who came from Northern Ireland and was obviously a Ewing descendant. Here he is. I have wired him up in a manner consistent with the genetic distance estimate I have, but of course there are many different ways to do that, so probably this will change.
The third match has an adoption, which obscures the true lineage of one of the ancestors. Conjecture is therefore required, and the easiest conjecture is to simply assume that this adopted child had a Ewing father from Northern Ireland, which yields just about the right overlap. Indeed I found an 1812 Georgia will for a "Thomas Ewing" that describes two minor children and their care, although it doesn't specifically mention adoption. That yields this path.
The third match is a quite close relative who, however, does not share my Ewing ancestor. She must have a Ewing ancestor of her own. And, indeed, she has a major mystery person by the name of Brown, who must have a Ewing somewhere in his life. Conjecture required in County Donegal to arrange the relationship; GENi won't give it to you directly because of her closer relationship with me. But this is the relationship to her Northern Irish ancestor.
