The cemetery was originally known as Pittsfield South Cemetery and known locally as South Cemetery until 1912 when it was reorganized and renamed Oakwood Cemetery. It is just south of Pittsfield on the east side of the Old Pittsfield-Martinsburg road in Pike County. It has some of the oldest burials in the county, but is well-kept and still in use. Many of these older burials once knew Abraham Lincoln, personally.
