The cemetery of the commissioners of the Ponevezh Yeshiva

The Ponivez Yeshiva Cemetery (abbreviated: Ponevezh Cemetery) is a Jewish cemetery for Sabbath-keepers, located in southern Bnei Brak, near the old Sabbath-keeping cemetery.

Upon its establishment, Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahneman, Rosh Yeshivat Ponevezh and its founder, planned to bury the bones of the Gaon from Vilna and Chafetz Chaim, but the idea did not materialize.

The cemetery was established in the 1960s by the founder of the Ponevezh Yeshiva, Rabbi Yosef Shlomo Kahneman. Charities were buried there who contributed to the maintenance of the Ponevezh institutions and were called "commissioners." In its southeastern part, a special compound was assigned to the rabbis of the Ponevezh Yeshiva, headed by Rabbi Kahneman himself. The first grave excavated in the cemetery is that of Rebbetzin Gotel Shach, the wife of the Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Eliezer Menachem Man Shach, who was laid to rest at Shivat Hospital in 5769. The tomb of Rabbi Shach himself is the only one of the tombs of the yeshiva rabbis located in an independent compound. The tomb is also unusual in its appearance and size and serves as a pilgrimage center especially on Rosh Chodesh evenings.

Among those buried in the cemetery: Chiefs and rabbis of the Ponevezh Yeshiva for their generations, including Rabbi Yechezkel Levinstein, Rabbi Shmuel Rozovsky, Rabbi Michal Yehuda Lipkovitz, as well as Rabbi Rafael Baruch Toledano, Rabbi Moshe Shmuel Shapira, Rabbi Gedaliah Nadel, Rabbi Gershon Edelstein.

In the cemetery compound is the tent containing the graves of the Rebbe of the Hasidic Alexander.

Among the public figures buried in the cemetery, former Bnei Brak mayors Moshe Bagnu and Shmuel Weinberg.

בית הקברות של נציבי ישיבת פוניבז' (בקיצור: בית הקברות פוניבז') הוא בית קברות יהודי לשומרי שבת, השוכן בדרום בני ברק, בסמוך לבית הקברות שומרי שבת הוותיק.

עם הקמתו תכנן הרב יוסף שלמה כהנמן, ראש ישיבת פוניבז' ומייסדה, להעלות לקבורה בו את עצמותיהם של הגאון מווילנה והחפץ חיים, אך הרעיון לא התממש.

היסטוריה

בית הקברות הוקם בשנות ה-60 של המאה ה-20 על ידי מייסד ישיבת פוניבז', הרב יוסף שלמה כהנמן. נקברו בו נדבנים שתרמו לאחזקת מוסדות פוניבז' וכונו "נציבים". בחלקו הדרום-מזרחי הוקצה מתחם מיוחד לרבני ישיבת פוניבז' ובראשם הרב כהנמן עצמו. הקבר הראשון שנכרה בבית הקברות הוא של הרבנית גוטל שך, רעייתו של ראש הישיבה הרב אליעזר מנחם מן שך, שהובאה למנוחות בי"ח בשבט תשכ"ט. קברו של הרב שך עצמו הוא היחיד מבין קברי רבני הישיבה הממוקם במתחם עצמאי. הקבר חריג גם במראהו ובגודלו והוא משמש מוקד עלייה לרגל במיוחד בערבי ראש חודש.

בין הקבורים בבית הקברות: ראשי ורבני ישיבת פוניבז' לדורותיהם ובכללם הרב יחזקאל לוינשטיין, הרב שמואל רוזובסקי, הרב מיכל יהודה ליפקוביץ, וכן הרב רפאל ברוך טולדנו, הרב משה שמואל שפירא, והרב גדליה נדל.

במתחם בית הקברות מצוי האוהל ובו קבריהם של אדמו"רי חסידות אלכסנדר.
