The Anglican Cemetery has high historic significance to Tauranga as the resting place of a number of notable people, and historic archive for genealogical and historic research, and a touchstone for descendants of Tauranga families. The original cemetery site, bounded by Hospital Street (now Seventeenth Avenue), Grace Road, Pitt Street (now Eighteenth Avenue) and Devonport Road, was on the southern edge of the Tauranga Borough and conveniently close to the hospital. The first burial in the Anglican Cemetery was Augusta Elizabeth Corlett (née Hawkes) (1834-1881) who died on 8 May 1881 at age 47.
