The governorship of Texas has been occupied by a succession of influential figures from diverse cultures since 1691; First the Spanish followed by the Mexicans. Later during the Texas revolution an interim government was put into place. After Texas won its independence from Mexico, the Republic of Texas was formed. Texas then became part of the United States on 29 December 1845.
