Project is written in both English and Icelandic!

This project is intended to explain to those, who work with genealogical information, how the Icelandic alphabet is used. Many people do not understand this alphabet and change, for example, the ancient Icelandic letter Þ into Th or T. The character Th does not exist in the Icelandic alphabet, except for when writing foreign words. There is also a tendency to delete the Icelandic letter Þ and write simple T instead it is also not right according to Icelandic spelling rules.

Through the centuries, the Icelandic language has survived virtually unchanged compared to the changes and developments in other languages. The Icelandic alphabet is characterised by special Icelandic consonants, Ðð; Þþ; and the vowels: Áá; Éé; Íí; Óó; Úú; Ýý; Ææ and Öö.
The only special Icelandic letters that exist in other Scandinavian alphabets are æ and ö. The letter æ is also used Danish and Norwegian, while the letter ö is also in Swedish.

Usually people are connected to their father. Women are usually the daughters of their fathers and men are the sons of their fathers. If a woman, for example, is the daughter of Jón, her last name would be written “Jónsdóttir”. Similarly, if a man is the son of Jón, his last name would be “Jónsson”.
The suffix "sen" at the end of a last name is not Icelandic and belongs to foreign loanwords. Also women seldom take their husband’s family name and certainly did not do so in the Middle Ages.
