As explained by my late father Sri Banda Kanakalingeswara Rao, the surname BANDA derived as follows:

  In good olden days, there was severe drought in Krishna district and there was accute shortage for drinking water even. Under those circumstances, our ancestors  got dug several ponds in the draught areas and each such pond was called "BANDA". And since then, our ancestors attained the same surname "BANDA !

  Let me also explain about our gothram!

Actually our gotrham is "AGNIVESHASA", comprising the rishis, 1. Bharadwaja,(2) Angirasa(3)Barhaspatya (Bruhaspati) (4)Kukkuta and (5) Agnivesha. so our gothram is AGNIVESHASA-  a pancharsheyam comprising five rishis. All our Banda family members having this surname should remember this information and refer the same while pronouncing pravara on any occassion! Gandhi Banda
