About the Banting surname

According to "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" man named William Banting disigned and went on what was the first diet. This regimen was referred to as a " banting", I believe he lived in England in the 1600's, I read it years ago, it struck me funny because I have been on a "banting" for years! Apparently I am not the first Banting with a wieght problem.
